The United Nations Fund for Children (UNICEF) is defined as “the leading international organization working to promote children’s rights and bring real change to the lives of millions of children”. Its goal is to ensure compliance with children’s rights to health, education and protection throughout the world.
Institución Educativa SEK has joined the initiative and, since 2004, has been working with UNICEF on the project “Education of girls in the Kolda region in Senegal,” which has already benefited 72 schools and 25,000 children. Among other actions, management and teaching staff have been trained in the daily management of schools. In all the schools, the students have received vitamin A, iron and medicines to combat intestinal parasites. Water points and sanitation blocks have also been constructed, which has improved the children’s health and hygiene.
Institución SEK pioneered the UNICEF “Child-Friendly Schools” network. Thanks to its example more than 40 schools throughout Spain have joined the initiative. For our SEK students, participation in these types of programs and activities heightens their global awareness, which is one of the cross-cutting themes of the 21st century. This is a real way for students to learn sensitivity and respect for individuals from different cultures and religions, and a good opportunity to work collaboratively.
